File Utilities

7-Zip – Freeware
It’s easy for Windows users to forget that WinZip isn’t the only file-compression utility in the world. Like its better-known competitors, the free 7-Zip unpacks a host of archive formats, including ZIP, TAR, GZ, and its own 7z format. Unlike WinZip, though, it can create TAR and GZ archives, which are commonly used on Unix and Linux systems.

Attribute Remover – Freeware
If you have ever needed to restore a backup from a CD then you know Windows copies the readonly attribute. This program will optionally recurse directories removing or setting file attributes.

CD Check – Freeware
CDCheck is a utility for the prevention, detection and recovery of damaged files on CD-ROMs with an emphasis on error detection. With CDCheck you can check your CDs and discover which files are corrupted. By using the program proactively, you can insure that your data on CD-ROMs are safe — before it’s too late! CDCheck provides the following features: readability verification, binary compare, CRC file creation (and verification) and file recovery.

ChangeExt – Freeware
Sometimes you need to know a little more about a file–its size, the last day it was modified, what kind of file it is, and so forth–before you open it. This Windows Explorer Add-On displays additional information about a file when you right-click its icon. Tailor it to show only the information you want. You can change a file extension by simply typing in the extension you want or selecting one from a list.

Microsoft Download Manager – Freeware
The Microsoft Download Manager enables you to download files simply and easily. It also makes downloading large files such as application and multimedia files quick and reliable. It was specifically designed to help users manage file downloads from supporting Microsoft Web sites. Once started, the Microsoft Download Manager’s easy-to-use interface displays the status of downloads and enables you to suspend active downloads or resume downloads that have failed.

Recuva File Recovery – Freeware
If you just want a good un-delete program with a small disk footprint (and no financial cost), then Recuva is what you’re looking for… the interface is the very model of restrained style and efficiency.
